NTC Mental Health Program

Constant thoughts of their families, inability to sign-off and return home, and fear of the virus are just a few of the numerous triggers of a seafarers’ stress. According to the figures from UK P&I Club, the provider of Protection and Indemnity insurance of third-party liabilities from owning ships or operating ships, suicide rates among seafarers have more than tripled since 2014. With the latest survey from the Shipowners’ Club, the overall seafarer happiness has dropped from 6.30 in Q1 2020 to 6.18 in Q2 2020. The overwhelming presence of the pandemic reels in triggers and continues to build a foundation for an unstable Mental Health.

Our Mental Health Program led by our in-house Instructor Mr. Michael Jimenez, RPsy, RN, MBA, LPT, Dip, OD, MAPsy offers courses with topics about acknowledging stressors, lending a hand to bunkmates and/or officemates, and simply understanding the essential factors of having healthy mental health.

Our Mental Health Program welcomes everyone and is an online course, available for participants on-board or at home. Under our Mental Health Program, courses available are (1) Mental Health Seminar and (2) Mental Health and Psychological Well-Being for Seafarers. What differs them from each other?

The Mental Health Seminar is a one-day seminar, focusing on three modules namely: Mental Health Awareness, Psychological First Aid, and Mindfulness. This course explores the components of Mental Health, helping another person in times of a psychological crisis using an evidence-based approach, and how a person can regulate their emotions and practice constant mindfulness. Kind words from a management level seafarer from a Norwegian Dry Bulk Carrier can attest that “I gained more knowledge in handling mental health and improved mental health awareness through this course. “

Another part of this Program is the Mental Health and Psychological Well-Being for Seafarers, which is offered as a five-day course is a thorough and in-depth course that discusses the theories and causation and more on Mental Health Literacy, counseling techniques, and managing stress. A seafarer on-board a Singaporean Gas Tanker “It would help me deal with stress when things get a little too overwhelming and find other ways to cope with my job's workload.” and commended our Subject Matter Expert, Sir Mike “He is well knowledgeable about mental health and discusses the course really well, makes the courses easy to understand.”

Based on David Gunnell, head of the Bristol Suicide and Self-Harm Research Group, “Suicide is likely to become a more pressing concern as the pandemic spreads and has longer-term effects on the general population, the economy, and vulnerable groups”

Together, let us acknowledge that Mental Health is as important as Physical Health. And during these challenging times, we are your devoted and committed partner in assisting our essential key workers with the training they need.
